The North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF) has launched targeted campaigns addressing the impacts of sea cage salmon farming on wild Atlantic salmon. These efforts focus on raising awareness of the environmental risks associated with the industry, including genetic introgression from escaped farmed fish and the spread of sea lice affecting wild salmon and other migratory species.
Through research, public education, and sustained engagement with stakeholders, NASF’s work has contributed to a significant shift in public opinion. Public opposition to sea cage salmon farming has increased from approximately 33% to over 70%, reflecting growing awareness of the risks posed to wild salmon and their habitats and the need for more sustainable alternatives.
We Did It! Let’s Undo It!
In recent years, the proliferation of open-net salmon farming has posed significant threats to wild salmon populations. Iceland, being one of the last strongholds for Atlantic Salmon, can not afford to make the same mistakes as other countries have made when it comes to salmon farming.

The Against the Current" Campaign (2018)
In 2018, the North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF) launched the “Against the Current” campaign, a strategic effort aimed at addressing the challenges faced by wild salmon populations due to industrial practices and environmental changes.
